Community Outreach reaches out to celebrate CNY festival with Eunos Crescent senior citizens

The Lunar New Year of the Pig commences on February 5th 2019.

However, the Community Outreach programme of the Mangala Vihara Dhamma Fellowship (MVDF) reached out to the senior citizens of Eunos Crescent, visited them on January 27th 2019, with festive goodies and ang pow (red packet) for the Chinese New Year celebration.

The annual visit becomes a traditional event not only to cultivate the spirit of sharing and caring but also epitomises one of the Three Core Values of the MVDF to practise compassion, gratitude and generosity.

There were 16 volunteers and 12 of them congregated at the Mangala Vihara (Buddhist Temple) and posed for a group photoshoot with Chairman Mervin Phua of the Management Committee and Bhante Cakkapala, MVDF Spiritual Advisor.

Four families with five family members

We set off together and visited four families with five family members and presented each member  an ang pow of $38 with the must have mandarin oranges, together with the usual goodies like beverages, toiletries , medicinal ointment, milk powder, towels, and miscellaneous dry ration and of course  the Chinese New Year cookies.

Each family member receives an ang pow and the must-have mandarin oranges …

Children volunteers

During this visit we had children tagged along to distribute the goodies and share the joy with the senior citizens. It was indeed a golden opportunity for them to practise generosity and experienced giving and sharing with compassion.

A golden opportunity for children to practise generosity and experienced giving and sharing with compassion.

We shared the joy of giving and the smile on the face of each family member gladdened our hearts. “In giving food, one gives five things. What five? One gives life, beauty, happiness, strength and intelligence. And in giving these things, one partakes in the qualities of life, beauty, happiness, strength and intelligence”. (A.lll,42)

Group photoshoots

We shared group photoshoots of the four families with our readers.  Noticed the joy and happiness in giving and sharing and the broad smiles, beaming from cheek to cheek all round is a wonderful and heartening sight.
