Laughter Yoga at Mangala Vihara (Buddhist Temple)

Laughter Yoga was started by a medical doctor from India, Dr Madan Kataria who started with just five people at Mumbai Park in 1995. Brother TC Lim was trained by the founder and Laughter yoga teacher, Lee-Jean Fung in March 2011 in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

Today, there are more than 10,000 laughter clubs in more than 100 countries and there are several in Singapore.

The concept of laughter yoga is based on the scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter. One gets the same physiological the psychological benefits. Endorphins, a feel-good hormone and a natural pain-killer are released, whilst cortisol, a stress hormone is reduced. In additional it brings oxygen to the body cells and enhancing one’s immune system and both the emotional and intelligent quotients.

From a medical point of view, Dr Otto Warburg, the only operson ever to win the Nobel Prize twice, said about the importance of oxygen: “Deep breathing techniques increase oxygen to the cells and are the most important factors in living a disease-free and energetic life. When cells get enough oxygen, cancer will not and cannot occur.”

Recognizing the therapeutic health benefit of laughter yoga MV Dhamma Fellowship under its Extended Outreach programme collaborated with Brother TC Lim and his partner Brother Steven Phua, conducted a debut laughter yoga session at Mangala Vihara (Buddhist Temple) (MVBT) on November 8th 2015 on the third level.

This event was made possible with the kind consent of Dr Lim Ah Swan, Chairman of the MVBT Committee, who also attended the session.

It started with a short briefing and light exercise that progressed to deep and heavy laughter that created a rousing and boisterous ambient.
